I SAW THIS MARVELLOUS SHOW FRIDAY
    AFTERNOON AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND
IT. THIS IS A WONDERFUL WAY TO BEGIN
    THE FRINGE FESTIVAL. ALL THREE
    PERFORMERS WERE SENSATIONAL AS
    WELL AS THE MUSIC.

What an enjoyable show. The humor was a delightful surprise — with many laugh-out-loud moments. Of course the music and lyrics are wonderful and the performers first-rate, but the staging, choreography and variation in tone made the hour just fly by. The music director/jazz pianist was absolutely superb.

A wonderful production, I highly recommend it. I don’t usually enjoy the “cabaret” format, where actors sing their favorite selections from the musical theatre repertoire and in between songs tell little stories. But this was quite different. Even though it was a similar format in that it was only the actors and a pianist, and the only material was the songs, the actors stayed in the character of the songs they were singing at all times, and the action flowed seamlessly from song to song. All of the actors were excellent singers, especially Bobby, who displayed amazing versatility and range, but more importantly, they all projected interesting and appropriate characters for the songs. My favorite as far as the acting is concerned was Margo. I’ve seen her many times in musical chorus situations, and she’s always been a stand out for her stage presence and enthusiasm, but this is the first time I’ve seen her really featured. Darius Smith was amazing! In this intimate setting it was possible to notice that he was working entirely from lead sheets, and it’s just incredible that he was able to keep track of his intricate piano arrangements just working from the chords and melodies. Also the vocal arrangements, that I assume were his, were some of the best I’ve heard on the Washington theatre scene.

This was received by Joan Goldberg – originally posted to our ‘Blogging It All’ section.

Attended Queen of the Bohemian Dream last night and loved it. The lyrics are sharp, smart, and funny; the music sultry and sexy. The singing, accompaniment, and stage business were extremely well done. Bravos to all the singers. We didn’t want the evening to end. My husband heard the interview with the director on the radio (WPFW) and convinced me we had to attend. Thank you to the producer and everyone else involved for a wonderful evening. After searching this website and links, I’ll be buying some CDs to hear many of the songs again. How wonderful that Fran Landesman is still writing such terrific lyrics. I look forward to hearing more.

I saw the show yesterday and the experience was wonderful.
All of the performers did top notch jobs. I loved Bobby’s nuance and great singing, Michael’s staging brought snap to the senses, Margo is a gem and Tracy is a class act. Darius piano playing augmented the night with his spirited piano playing. And, what great material!!! A night full of craft and emotion.

Love this show. Saw it on the 21st, and enjoyed it so much, I came back again on the 24th. This Queen definitely deserves to hold more court – hopefully a lengthier session. My only complaint was that it was too short! Tracy, Margo and Bobby all have incredible voices – supple, nuanced, gorgeous harmonies. Great material; extremely well-written songs and arrangements, played brilliantly by Darius Smith. Fave moments? – Bobby’s soft shoe scuffling Feets; Tracy’s M.O.T.H.E.R. – with her mom sitting right up front in the second row no less!; and innocent-faced-sweet-voiced Margo rowing away on high tide. A crowning achievement!

My friend Lorraine suggested I catch the tribute to Ms. Fran. I can not thank her enough. Delighful music, beautifully performed, Fran sure ought to be “Seeing Me” and be proud of what she saw. Walking away from the theater, groups of people were talking of finding the music for their collections. The Washington Post called the show a “gem”. The Post was on the mark. David Thomas

Just a post-fringe follow-up: I saw the show 3 times, because after seeing it the first time, I had to take 2 friends to see it also. I enjoyed it as much all three times, and the songs have stayed with me. I find myself continuing to hum the tunes. Thank you for bringing this show to the fringe and introducing me to the incredible talent of Fran Landesman and the amazing collaboration between her and Simon Wallace. I have just purchased some of the recordings available on Amazon so that I can continue to listen to these amazing songs.
